INVERLAIR LODGE

This is quite an old house dating from the end of the 18th century, the lodge was purchased by John Walker of Crawfordton in 1834, when he bought part of the Loch Treig estates from the Duke of Gordon. It was extended in 1860 and in 1880 by his son. Its a large and rather ordinary looking building giving no hint of a rather exciting time in its history. During World War II the lodge (like many another large highland houses) was requisitioned by the War Office and was in military terms known simply as "Special Workshop No 6" Special Operations Executive (SOE) were trained here in the neccessary black arts required for behind the line operations. In 1941 in an weird attempt to muster support for peace between the the UK and Germany , Rudolph Hess, Deputy Fuhrer to Adolph Hitler flew from Augsburg to Sotland in an attemtp to meet the Duke of Hamilton. His plane crashed and he was, according to local say so, impisoned here after serving time in the Tower of London - the last of that facilities long list of celebrity inmates. He was sentenced to life inprisonment at the Nuremburg War Trials and transferred to what was then partitioned Berlin. Its certain that he was mentally ill, Hess died in Spandau Prison in 1987, by his own hand.
